I have a 1999 Jaguar Xj6 with approximately 81,000 miles. Within the last 2 months when turning slowly (parking) I hear a creaking noise from the steering wheel that sounds like it needs lubrication as you would a creaky door. I asked a Jaguar mechanic and he said as long as there is no play in the steering or if the steering is not wobbly there shouldn't be a concern. Last night when driving the creaking noise was more pronounced and after parking and turning off the engine the car was making a continuous semi-loud ticking/pinging noise for about 15 minutes? Do you have any idea what this could be? Is it safe to drive without causing further damage (after hearing the ticking noise, I am concerned about starting the engine)? and do you have a ball park figure of the repair cost?

The pinging and ticking is the exhaust system cooling down, not a concern! The steering noise could be a slightly worn U-Joint on the column...
