2001 Ford Windstar, 114000 miles, has been determined the lifter is collapsing. Was given an estimate of 1500-2500 to have it fixed. Does that sound about right?

Depends on the hourly rate. For the cost of a $20 Chilton's or Haynes motor repair manual for your car, and the cost ($11 apiece) of replacement lifters, you can do it yourself.

You don't have to pull the engine. If you have the know-how to read VERY detailed instructions that are fully illustrated with pictures and drawings, you CAN do it yourself. Like I said, WITH a Chilton's or Haynes motor repair manual for your make, model, and year vehicle. With the manual it is basically ABC123.

i should add, if you can afford it and it satisfies your concern, then by all means let them do it.
