2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer hit an animal - brakes

I hit a possum going about 45mph and now when I step on my brakes, there is a horrible grinding noise that lingers even after I take my foot off. What could this be and how costly could it be?

You will have to jack up the car and remove the wheel and inspect for any damage around the caliper and backing plate, if you are not confident in doing this a mechanic can do a n inspection very quickly and should not charge very much.
