I got a po342 and po343 code on my small cheap code reader. I have a check engine light; I installed a new cam sensor and cleared the codes. truck started right up. I let it run for about 20 minutes, shut it off, restarted it and the light came back on. A friend of mine said to replace the crank sensor too. I went through the same procedure and got a light on the dash. I guess my question is, does this truck call for sensors that need to be programed and if so, how. I don't have access to fancy meters or scanners. What can I do? Please help me!

Hi,

Both codes are specific to the camshaft position sensor. It could be the sensor (but that's new), an issue with the reluctor ring, dirt, or even worn camshaft bearings producing too much end play.

As far as your questions related to a relearn procedure, there is one for the crankshaft position sensor, but that wouldn't cause this code.

Both codes provide basically the same diagnostics. I attached the diagnostics for the P0343 below. Take a look through them and let me know if you are comfortable performing them.

Let me know.

Take care,

joe
