My wife is currently driving a '98 Chevy Cavalier with ~118,000 miles on it. Automatic transmission, 2 wheel drive...

It won't go in reverse. It was pretty odd - I was with her when it happened. We where in a strip mall when we stopped at one store. We went in, came back out, reversed out of the parking spot and went to the next store. She parked, and I went inside by myself (she didn't turn the car off). When I came back, it wouldn't go in reverse; she didn't even feel it shifting into reverse at all.

All of the other gears appear to work as advertised. She is suspicious that neutral isn't working (that it's going straight into park) but I think neutral works fine. The fluid is red and w/o any junk in it.

We got the transmission rebuild last year (July 15th, 2006).

Other things that have happened to it: it got it's front lower control arms replaced and rear brakes done in 11/21/06. I don't think that this info will help, but the AC doesn't work, the front brakes seem to slip a little (although always stop the car) and the fan switch won't use speeds 1 and 2 (although I've read the solution to that in this forum).

No leaks that we can tell. We don't feel it shift into reverse - that's the only sound (other than the habitual squeak it has; don't all old cars squeak?).

Any ideas what may be wrong with our cavalier?
