I have a 2001 Chevy S10 pickup (4 cyln) with 105,000 miles on it. Recently, both dash break lights (i/p and ABS) have been coming on intermittently (about 1 week, sometimes at start up, other times they don't come on, they never come on while driving). I have had no trouble stopping the vehicle, but the "replace the breaks" rubbing/cyclical noise recently started (1 week). The dealer has said that the ABS motor and module both need to be replaced ($2100) and the truck also needs breaks and new tires (which were replaced 8 months ago). I am planning to get a new truck in about a year/year in a half. Do I have to replace the ABS system for the vehicle to be safe to drive? Is there a way to turn the ABS system off and just use the regular breaks? Thanks for your thoughts.

if you hear a metal scraping sound from a wheel it could be that the breaks are worn down and the metal tab on the brakes is hitting letting you know the brakes are getting worn out. without abs the vehicle brakes work like regular brakes,
