Excessive effort on brake pedal to stop.
I checked wheel cylinders, brake fluid, brake pads and shoes. Everything was fine. The van has antilock brakes. What could be the problem? We are original owners and the van has been well cared for.

You may have a failed booster, have a mechanic check this for you, they can do this in a few Minuit's.
