My 1999 Dodge Dakota sport club cab 3.9L V6 4x4 with 155000 km's makes a pinging/knocking/fluttering noise when driving, it is not constant but worst at about 3000 rpm in 3rd gear going up hill. The noise is not common in 1st or 2nd gear. 3rd and 4th are bad. Even on a flat road accelerating in 3rd or 4th you can hear it. I have had the computer flashed to fix a spark knock issue but it still knocks, all flashes are up to date as of march 07. I have checked the PCV and is working fine. I have not checked the EGR valve. The check engine light is not on so i am assuming that the timing is ok. The knocking is getting worse and worse and also this thing is absolutely chugging down gas. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check the EGR ASAP. Fuel Octane? Engine Overheating, Hot plugs and Knock sensor.
