I'm living in Peru and in the market for a car, I've been fortunate to come across a manual 1997 Subaru Forester with 65,000 that has been very well maintained and obviously used minimally. Of course I will get it checked out with a mechanic first, but any thoughts on issues that could come up with buying a nearly 17-year old Forester? It sounds a bit loud when climbing hills, is this normal?

Please keep in mind, this is my opinion. I feel they are great cars. However, they do have issues with head gaskets going bad around 100K. I would make sure there are no problems there. Also, CHANGE THE TIMING belt when it is recommended.
