Automatic Transmission shifting Problems

Does the D4 light blink while driving? Did the Check Engine Light show? It sounds like you need a input shaft speed sensor here is a video to show you how.

ATF = Auto trans fluid.

Since no error codes are showing, the fluid condition is the first thing to check, not just the level.

I would suggest getting the vehicle on a diagnostic to get the operations/functioning data of the vehicle while running.

Most likely problems would be from the engine performance and Throttle Position Sensor and O2 sensor are 2 likely sources. Did you check the spark plugs?

Engine performnance would affect the gear shifting.

My car will not Shift correctly and the D4 Indicator on my dashboard is also on.

Here is what happened:

I hit a deer on my way to work, car was drive-able back home (31.7 Miles)

During the ride home the D4 Indicator on the Dashboard was blinking, so I went 30 MPH the entire way home trying to go as easy as possible on the car and transmission.

The next morning surveying the damage seemed like just the radiator got bent up a little bit as well some obvious body damage.

After fixing up the body, went to drive the car and the D4 Indicator Light was still on as well as the Check Engine Light (Which was on previously).

After some troubleshooting, it was decided to get a replacement transmission, which we got from a local salvage yard (the guy said it was from a working 1999 Civic).

Swapped in new transmission, checked and flushed all fluids, the D4 Indicator was still on.

So more troubleshooting, which two Honda techs said it sounds like it was the ECU (ECM) so I went back to local salvage yard and got the ECU from the exact same car (same part number's)

Got the new ECM installed, and programmed to my car.

D4 Indicator Light still blinking, and car is still not shifting.

Any help please!

if you hit a deer and it was not on previously and did the work like PCM i would think that maybe a wire is pinched or shorted out. i am sending which wires to check for shorts from PCM. see picture.

Just to add to this one I know you said that the check engine light was on before. But why not check and see what the exact code numbers are to see if it could lead you to your new problem? I am sure it set a code if the d4 light is flashing.

scan for codes like Saturn tech said it may be something else causing this.

i got a 99 civic automatic with 150k mileage. way back before i noticed this problem and went to a mechanic and he said that its normal to all civic that every time it shifts gear, it feels like someone hit you from behind because of the kick...now, its getting bad. its not shifting right. for my first gear to 2nd i need to press the pedal really hard for it to switch...my RPM is getting really high. it needs to be like around 45mph before it switches to 3rd gear and for that it consumes alot of gas. this all started when i got a check engine on and i believe number 1 and 2 sensors are dmgd blah2x... is it my computer that got a problem? or is it my transmission? if so, how much does it takes to fix it?? thanx!

That isn't normal for the transmission to act that way. Since the transmission acted funny when the light came on, it sounds like something electronic. Did you have the computer scanned?

Yea i did..and it said number 1 and 2 and a manufacturer model blah2x. So does that mean its my computer? Can i repair it?? If not can i buy a used one??

I have to be honest. I don't recognize the codes you mentioned. Was there anything that was started with a letter and then had a 4 digit number?

The Codes are as follows:

P1298
P1768

Those are the codes as far as I know.

the 1298 is too much voltage going to electrical load detector and should really be checked by a profession, but I have sent instructions on how to check it. the other is linear solenoid and there are three different transmissions in this car, two are pretty much the same, but other is a CVT transmission, which has cording to codes you do not have. I have sent instructions for that as well which is a short in wiring if fuse is not blown (15).

Hello I seem to have a problem with my 99 Honda Civic, I had motor problems and I replaced the motor with a 96 Honda Civic motor, both of the motors are D16Y7 but I have the 96 motor installed. There seems to be a few problems with my Automatic Transmission, before the swap I had no problems with the transmission but now it acts up. My D4 Light is blinking, when I take my car out Park to other postions it jerks pretty hard, and when I try to drive my car it does not shift automatically when driving it stays on the first Automatic gear. Linear Solenoid is brand new OEM and I replaced the other solenoids. What could be the problem?

have a trans guy scan for codes, when engine was replaced it may have damaged the oil pump due to incorrect install of torque converter.

Hmm I'll check in with the Transmission guy. So it must be damaged from taking out both the transmission and motor and swapping the transmission to the new motor. He said the code read P1768 which was the Linear Solenoid and the code did not pop up on the scanner anymore but the other code that popped up, I believe was a P700 or P0700.

what happens is the torque convert slips a little then you put it back in without knowing and it breaks the pump gear or puts junk in trans. However if the engine runs bad then the trans will as well. there are three different transmissions for your car and code 700 means there are multiple codes present.

Oh....Okay, should I just get a new Transmission then?

you should at least have it checked out first because it may be a trans control module which anew trans won't help or a wiring issue as the trans you have may be ok.
