engine sounds 93 cherokee sport

Hi I have a 93 jeep cherokee sport 4.0 145,000 miles i have owned it for about 9 months now
It has been making a strange sound like a sparking sound it has been doing it for about 5 or 6 weeks. I havent been driving it because im not sure what the is making the sound or where it is coming from. I know that the sound isnt coming for the valve train. I know that there is no light flashing when you run it at night. I think that the sound is coming from the oil pan. so if you can help me please do.

Well, does it make this sound only when driving or at idle, too? More info is needed on what you're hearing/seeing - can you open the hood and still hear the sound? can you isolate it to the front half or rear half of the engine compartment? Can you isolate it to the upper or lower half of the engine compartment? "Sparking sound" is a bit vague - I can imagine a "zapping" sound, but does it sound more like flimsy metal on metal ? Does the sound increase in frequency as engine speed increases?
