what can cause a loud whining noise and the car to not stay running when started. Noise gets louder when you give it gas to keep it running, but stalls out

Hi there,

this may be the starter not disengaging, but this won't cause the engine to stall, so i would be checking the starter and stat with looking for vacuum leaks, and don a scan and a tune up.
