Hello. Yesterday I was driving and the car in front of me somehow made a piece of debris from the road start rolling towards my car. I could not avoid it as I was going about 60mph and there were cars behind and to the left of me. I had no choice but to run right over it. It was a piece of metal grating but it was round and thin, maybe the size of a 10-12 inches in diameter. Anyhow, it made a horrible noise as my car drove over it. Immediately after, the oil light came on. I pulled over about 1 minute later and oil was leaking, the right front wheel well was coated w/ oil also. After a few minutes all the oil was gone. The dipstick was bone dry. The AAA guy looked under the car and he thinks that the debris struck the oil filter and caused all the oil to leak out. He could see a 'nick' in the filter. Is this possible? I left the car at my mechanic and I'm hoping it's not something more serious.

Hi there,

Yes this is quite possible as the filter is only thin metal, hopefully the sump has not been damaged as well.
