Overheating indication

More than likely you have a faulty engine coolant temperature sensor. If the engine is cold but the temperature gauge goes right to hot, then the PCM is getting bad information from this sensor.

I attached the complete description of this system. The proper way to test this is to hook up a scan tool and see what the temperature sensor is telling the PCM. There are other components that can effect this system so it may not be the sensor itself which is why we need to monitor it with a scan tool.

Also, you will be able to check for codes. If we have a code in the system then that will point us in the right direction.

Let me know if you can get the codes with a scan tool. If you don't have one then most parts stores will pull them for you free of charge.

Okay. What about the cylinder head temperature sensor? Could it be that?

This is the engine coolant temperature sensor. They just call it a different name.

So yes, it could be your issue but again, without monitoring it with a scan tool it would be a guess. It is the most likely cause but I see all the time that the most likely cause is not the issue.
