2004 Pontiac Grand Prix Door Lock Actuator

Hello - I believe this is the info you need. Lock Replacement - Rear Door Notes Lock Replacement - Rear Door Removal Procedure Important: Do not attempt repairs in order to correct lock discrepancies. Replace the lock. Remove the rear door trim panel . Remove the rear door water deflector.

Open the outside handle rod to lock clip located on the door lock. The door handle rod should be loose from the lock. Remove the inside door handle.

Remove the screws (1, 3, 2) securing the lock to the door (1). Remove the door lock and rods through the access hole in the door inner panel.

Disconnect the electrical connector (2) from the lock by pulling out the tab (1). Installation Procedure

Connect the electrical connector (2) to the lock by pushing in on the tab. Install the lock and rods through the access hole in the inner door panel.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices. Install the screws (1, 3, 2), securing the lock to the door. Install the top screw first (1), then the bottom (2) and lastly the middle screw (3). Tighten the screws to 10 N.m (89 lb in). Install the inside door handle. Refer to Door Handle Replacement - Rear Inside

Important: The outside handles have adjustable outside handle lock rods. This allows for adjustment of the amount of travel needed in order to operate the outside handle. When servicing a vehicle with adjustable outside handle lock rods, remove all free play between the outside handle and the lock. Also, do not operate the outside handle before these connections are made. Install the outside handle rod into the clip. Close the clip over the outside handle rod. Inspect the door for proper operation. Install the rear door water deflector. Install the rear door trim panel.

Thanks for your quick response. The instructions you posted are great but I have a question.
I was able to remove the door handle rod. But how do I remove the inside door handle?
That's the only thing stopping me from getting the lock out of the door panel.

Hello - Does this help you out.........is this what you are looking for? Door Handle Replacement - Front Inside Notes Door Handle Replacement - Front Inside Removal Procedure Remove the front door trim panel. Raise the door window to the full up position.

Remove the rivet (3) from the inside handle. Use a center punch to drive the inside handle (2) mounting rivet (3) mandrel into the rivet head to create a pilot hole. Use a 6.35 mm (1/4 in) drill bit to drill out the rivet. Remove the inside handle rod (1) from the lock rod guide block.

Remove the inside handle (2) by sliding it forward until it releases from the door. Turn the inside handle clockwise to release it from the inside handle rod. Remove the inside handle from the door. Installation Procedure

Install the inside handle to the door. Turn the inside handle (2) counterclockwise to install the inside handle rod (1). Install the inside handle (2) into the slots in the door, then slide it rearward to lock it in place. Install the inside handle rod (1) into the lock rod guide block. Use a 6.35 mm (1/4 in) to install the inside door handle. Inspect the door for proper operation. Install the front door trim panel.

Wow...I didn't realize that in order to replace that power lock actuator I'd be removing the lock and I'd have to drill out the rivet for the inside door handle!

In the set of instructions to reinstall the inside door handle after I drill out the rivet it says to "Use a 6.35 mm (1/4 in) to install the inside door handle." What does that mean? I use a 1/4" screw or bolt or what?

I would definitely use bolts and lock nuts……screws can vibrate loose. Make sure they are not too long.

So I finished up replacing the lock actuator! Here are some tips in case anyone else planning on doing this to a 2004 Grand Prix.

The lock actuator and the locking mechanism are both one piece so I ended up ordering it from the dealer ($138), since the actuator's I saw online are JUST the actuator and not the entire part. GM Part #: 15813546. There isn't any possible way that the actuators online will work unless you take apart the locking mechanism....which I'm not sure is even possible, so save yourself the time and just get it from the dealership.

When I started putting the door back together I ended up using a cap screw socket with a lock washer to attach the inner door handle back to the door after I drilled out the rivet holding it into place. I used a 1/4" x 3/4" and there was enough clearance.

Other than that, all the instructions that ImpalaSS provided were right on! Thanks again for all your help!

You may have some recalls on your vehicle. The dealer may fix these for free. Please contact the dealer service department, give them the VIN number of your car and have them check on these to see if they apply to you.
