Engine Performance problem
1996 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 180KKM miles

My old faithful Camry 96 - 2.2 GX has been serving me well over the years. Off late I realised that the orange engine alarm light came on and off for few seconds(sometime a minute). It will dissappear for a week before it come back again. There is no noticeable lack of performamnce, however I noticed that the engine idling rpm is a bit unstable, at about 800rpm it will dip to 700rpm and goes back(in split second). I am getting worried if this is a sign of car breaking down or is there a big problem and I need to get it fixed. In this part of the country, I do not know if there is a engine scan available. Otherwise how could we know the cause of such a warning. TQ.

First thing you need to do is have the codes read, Post the results with the code number(s). Even if the service engine light is not on, there should be freeze frame data stored.
If it won't make it, buy a cheap scanner, they can be had for 30-40 dollars, a good investment, since they cover all cars sold in the USA from 96 on...
If the light is blinking, it means possible damage to the converter...service it right away!

Idle problems can be caused by, idle air control, tps, fuel pressure, and vacuum leaks, so read the codes and post results here...

Firstly I am impressed how quickly you responded to my earlier question. Nevertheless I am not able to get my car scanned to obtain the fault codes. In this part of the country, I really do not know who has this gadget. Is there an Auto Zone in my country?
Secondly what converter are you refering to, I am a bit unsure on this. TQ.

Flash MIL(check engine light) means possible damage to the catalytic converter (exhaust system).

Hi Vincent,

Which part of Malaysia are you from?

Check out auto electrical repair shops, most of them have scanners that can read the codes.

Price range should be RM 40 to RM 80 for scanning the codes. Some might do it free for you.
