1995 Volkswagen Golf Replaced battery now car looses power

1995 Volkswagen Golf 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

I recently replaced the battery imediately after the car would loose power when the RPM's sincreased. It almost seemed like the fuel pump was going out or the clutch slipping. You can give it gas and it will start to drive normal then it will just loose power if you back offf and try it again the same thing will happen.

Did you maintain power to the computer before you disconnected the battery?

Were any symptoms present prior to the battery change?

HAve you rechecked your connections for being tight?

Was there anything you may not have plugged back in?

HAve you checked for any possible re-learn prodecures?

No I did not.

No everything was working great.

HAve you rechecked your connections for being tight?

I have and also clean the cables.

Was there anything you may not have plugged back in?

Everything is the way it was prior.

HAve you checked for any possible re-learn prodecures?

I have not.

I have not been able to locate info on a re-learn procedure. Volkswagon info is not always the easiest to get clear answers with.

This is what I think. When the computer loses it's memory, it loses the ability to idle the way it was based on driving habits. Many of the the cars from the middle to early 90's required a period of driving for the computer to relearn how it needs to function. Before doing anything else I would drive it for a week or so like this and see if it begins improving.

The strange part is that it will run fine until about 3000 rpm's then it cuts out like there is a govner. The problem does not seem as bad when going down hill, you can actually rev it much higher. Going up hill is a different story, it seems to be worse when there is a load or torque on it. Could this be a fuel problem?

Sometimes ironic tings happen and it may not be related to the battery. I would first suspect the same as you as a fuel delivery problem. They way to check it is to hook a fuel pressure gauge to it and run it to the windsheild so you can monitor it when the symptoms occur.

It's been awhile but I just wanted to let everyone know that it was the fact that the battery was disconnected caused this problem. Took it to a great local mechanic and tried several times to work on the computer but kept getting kicked out. Ended up at Volkswagon and they fixed it fairly quickly and the charge was under $100
