Electrical problem

the only way my car stays running is if i hold the key forward like i was starting it but not turning the starter . so i was wondering what the problem is ? This happened just all of a sudden asa i was driving down the street, it just died or stalled and when i would turn the key over it would start but as soon as i let go of the key it would die. I had to drive home holding the key turned just so to keep it running!! Not so easy when you have to shift with your left hand UGH??!! Can you help?! And how much do you think it will cost to fix.........
