Okay PATTY789

This will sorta guide you to what you have to do, it is really easy to do!

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/stall-at-idle

My wife's is on the top of the engine and has 2 bolts.

Our Escape would idle low, then it got to point it would die when you stopped. Revving + holding brake was only way to keep it running.

Took it to fellow R/C airplane pilot, he doubles as a S.C. State HWY DEPT mechanic.

When I got to his house, he was repairing a tractor. Told him my sob story. Escape was still barely running, I raised the hood.

He said, (and I quote)."It could be the Idle Air Control (IAC)", as he pointed to it, and emphasized it with a sharp rap using the wrench in his hand.

By golly it straightened right up, and ran darn good.

That was a 15/16 Craftsman wrench, box end, kinda a medium rap. LOL!

We removed and cleaned it, it may have gone on being Fine, for a lot longer. Since it was my wife's, I took no chances, with my Well-Being.

YES, I visited parts store and replaced it, figured it had 100,000 miles on it, and constantly was a moving part, replacement of this component, was just preventative maintenance in my eyes.

Hope this helps. Hope I am dead on! Cleaning would be free, and at least Maybe eliminate this factor out of the equation.

You can go on with yours (if it's working well now and replace it later, if you have the same feelings about it as I did.

I looked up a new one at Advance Auto Parts for your vehicle. There was one for about $79.00 if you do need one.

A few pictures of the wife's below, yours is very similar.

Please let us know how this goes.

is the check engine light on?? if ir is, we need the codes.

Look for vacuum leaks around the pcv. common for splitting at the elbow causing massive vacuum leak

Engine Performance problem
2001 Ford Explorer Two Wheel Drive Automatic 115251 miles

I have a 2001 Ford Eplorer. Im having problems with it starting in the mornings. It will not stay on unless I keep my foot on the gas. If I take my foot off the truck dies out. If I keep my foot on the gas for about 15 min it will finally stay on for me to get it in gear. The rest of the day its fine.

Has the check engine light come on? Have you checked the idle air control valve? Has the EGR been checked as well as checking for vacuum leaks?

My vehicle will not run at idle, I have to feed it fuel. Also when I come to a stop sign it will stop running. If I come to a corner to turn and the idle drops it will stall out.

If the check engine light is on, read the codes, read em anyway, sometimes there is freeze frame data that will tell you what specifically happened, if nothing found check the Idle air control valve, it's bolted to the throttle body. get a can of spray gumout, spray the vac lines and maniflod area, when the idle changes, youve found the leak! You want the engine running and spray on the outside but do direct the stream onto the hoses, if it is a vacuum leak, the engine idle will change speed, then you have detected a leak, repair the vacuum leak and see how it runs!

Hi Merlin just wanted to let you know that I found the problem with my 2001 explorer. I checked for a vacuum leak like you suggested and found none. I then went a little deeper and found the idle spped control on top of the throttle body was stuck. I removed this and cleaned it and it works fine now. Thanks anyway.

Hi,

Has the check engine light stayed on when the engine was running? If it has, then you should have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a quick video that shows how it's done:

https://youtu.be/YV3TRZwer8k

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but often times a auto parts store will do it free of charge. So if the light stays on, have that done.

I have to be honest. What you described sounds like an issue with what is called an idle air control valve (IAC). The IAC is what is responsible for maintaining engine idle speed. Also, when you turn the AC on, it should react by increasing the idle speed to accommodate the added load.

Please understand I am mentioning the IAC based on the symptoms. You can try to service it. It is located on the throttle body. Take a look through this link:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/idle-air-control-valve-service

If you find it is bad, here is a link that shows in general how one is replaced:

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

When you start the car, it won't stay running unless you keep pressing the gas. Sometimes to start it you have to press the gas just to get it started.

Hello,

Is the Engine Light on? If so will need to get codes pulled. You can go by tour local parts store and have them pull codes. Post codes here.

Also, Have you checked the IAC(Idle Air Control) Motor.

Ok,

Have you removed it and cleaned it out. It most likely has carbon deposits which are stopping it from openning and closing properly.

You cleaned the Plunger or the electrical connection. Here is what you should have cleaned if you didn't and I would use Carb Cleaner and you may also need a small flat screw driver to get into it and scrape some the deposits off. The pic may not be the exact one on your vehicle.

Did you notice any scratches in the bore or on the plunger. And did you move the plunger to make sure it was moving the full distance.

It is possible that the plunger and or bore has scratches and not working properly.

Hey, Sorry for delay in repsonding.

A common condition is to find the idle air bypass solenoid extended all the way out (closed). This usually means the engine has an air leak and the PCM is trying to bring the idle speed back down by closing the idle air bypass circuit.

Follow the link below for a video with diagnostic proceedure and pics. This is set up on my business webpage.

Have you checked fuel pump pressure when it is cold? As far as the pump, I question it. Have you had the computer scanned since the light came back on? Is it the same code as before? If so, what code is it? Also, has anyone checked the temp sensor?

Let me know.

dont believe it is same code, they told me my fuel pressure is running low and that the fuel pump would be the only answer. Would the temp sensor be on the codes? I know he told me it showed a misfire. And no I always have drove into the shop and then they scan, I need to leave overnight I guess and let them scan?

Yes, it would be. It tells the computer how rich or lean to make the fuel mixture based on outside temp and coolant temp. However, if the fuel pressure is low, there is a good chance that is the problem.

If you would like to check the fuel pump, here is a how to video and directions. You will need a gauge to check it, but most parts stores will lend or rent them to you.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other directions.

I have Ford Explorer 2000 with 104000 miles on it. The problems just start about 3 weeks ago: When I start the car, the engine start OK with the RPM needle went to 1.5 and it drop down to to 0.5 and pull back to 1. Some time the RPM needle went to 0.5 then pull it down to 0 which caused the engine to stop (I can heard the sound of the engine drop before it shut down). When the RPM needle drop down to 0.5 or the engine almost shut down and if I apply the gas padle then the egine will go back to normal and the car stay run OK. I did replaced with a battery but the engine still shut down. Could you please help me to identify the problems? Thanks

2000 Ford Explorer Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My car will only start when I am pushing on the gas. Once started it will only stay running when my foot is on the gas. The first time this happened it was cold -0 degrees. I started it and warmed it up for 30 minutes. It stayed running. This time it is 25 degrees.
Our repair shop has said the tranmission is having problems - no overdrive.
Are these related or what else could be causing this problem.
